For people facing brain cancer, the blood–brain barrier is one of the biggest obstacles standing in the way of better treatment. At Peter Mac, Professor Ben Hogan and his team are working to change that. Professor Hogan’s lab is focused on better understanding the barrier, and finding clever new ways to help therapies cross it. The aim is to understand the brain’s natural defences well enough to find safe, targeted ways to let treatment molecules through when they are needed most. 💬 “For lots of different types of brain cancer where the blood–brain barrier is intact, it's a major hurdle to getting drugs in delivering them to the brain. If we could safely open that barrier, it would hugely improve outcomes,” says Prof Hogan. 💜 If the team can find safe new ways through, the impact could be profound: more possibilities for researchers, more options for clinicians, and more hope for people facing some of the hardest-to-treat cancers. 🚒🔥 What a climb. What an achievement. On Saturday, 1,000 firefighters took on 28 flights of stairs at Crown Metropol, climbing in full firefighting gear weighing 25kg, in support of Peter Mac Cancer Foundation, Lifeline and @000_foundation . The energy, determination and community spirit was nothing short of incredible. Together, participants have already raised an amazing $1.1 million, with more than $400,000 set to support beneficiaries including Peter Mac Cancer Foundation.
