Collingwood wins the 30th Peter Mac Cup! 
Traditional rivals Collingwood Football Club and Carlton Football Club once again came together to take a stand against cancer and support groundbreaking research at Peter Mac. We’re thrilled to announce that we have raised over $397,000 for cancer research at Peter Mac through the 30th Peter Mac Cup!

This includes a generous $100K matched gift donation from the Pratt Foundation, and a $50K donation from Strathmore Community Bank who sponsored this year’s Peter Mac Cup Breakfast. Congratulations to Collingwood for winning the 30th Peter Mac Cup, claiming a win over Carlton in an exciting match between the two clubs.

Collingwood players visit Peter Mac 

In the lead up to the Peter Mac Cup, players Ed Allen, Billy Frampton, Ned Long and Oleg Markov toured the centre and met with Peter Mac staff and patients.

Mason Cox visits  Peter Mac 
Proving he also has a big heart, Collingwood’s Mason Cox dropped in to Peter Mac to visit some of our patients (and massive Pies fans), Nick and Ricky. They had the chance to meet one of football’s tallest heroes and to hold the 2010 AFL Premiership Cup. 

This visit not only meant the world to Nick and Ricky, but also made the day of our staff!

Carlton at Peter Mac 
Former co-captain of Carlton and patient of Peter Mac Sam Docherty know's too well the challenges cancer patients can face. Whilst undergoing treatment for testicular cancer, his Carlton teammates banded together to shave their heads, and collectively raised over $200,000 in 2021 for Peter Mac.

    Get creative for cancer research! This year, we’re inviting the Peter Mac community to get creative for cancer research and design a new greeting card that celebrates the holiday season. Our previous artwork for the Foundation's annual greeting card was kindly submitted by two-year-old Jamie, who painted freely on paper, and his dad Kyle, a haematology nurse at Peter Mac, who transformed Jamie’s painting into a holiday scene. This is a special opportunity to see your artwork brought to life, all while playing a big role in helping Peter Mac express thanks and gratitude to our wonderful supporters. The competition is open to everyone who has a personal connection to Peter Mac including patients, loved ones, supporters, and of course staff.     July is Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Month. Head and neck cancers are a broad range of cancers that develop in the mouth, lips, throat, nose, sinuses and saliva glands. Ken was diagnosed with head and neck cancer in his throat, and successfully treated. However, he still lives many side effects, including a dry throat that he describes as like “having a cactus in his mouth.” And he does not enjoy the simple pleasure of eating like he used to . “I pine for the day I feel hungry again.” By supporting Peter Mac, you support research advances into new and improved treatments that both save lives and leave fewer scars for people with cancer, including head and neck cancers.     July is Sarcoma Awareness Month. Sarcoma is a rare cancer which affects the bones and soft tissues. It can affect people of all ages and is often difficult to treat. In 2022, Leanne was diagnosed with a rare head and neck sarcoma. Throughout her cancer journey, Leanne struggled to find information. “I would see things for other cancer types, and I would think ‘Where’s mine?’” Now over three years since finishing treatment, Leanne is passionate about sarcoma advocacy and awareness.     When Dr Alexander Lewis found a whole new way to kill leukaemia cells, he knew he was on to something. Dr Lewis and his team discovered that blocking the production of haem, a protein essential to the growth of cancer cells, causes a buildup of copper – which kills the cancer cells. Now, Dr Lewis is focusing on HOW the cancer cells are killed by haem depletion. And whether these processes can be targeted to treat leukaemia in new ways. 💬 “This will be transformative for not just leukaemia but other diseases in which haem levels may be contributing to disease symptoms,” says Dr Lewis. 💜 Thanks to your support, these early results have given researchers a new path forward. And could lead to a future with more targeted and effective treatments for leukaemia patients.
