New fellowship strengthening our care for young people at Peter Mac
03 June 2026
Young people with cancer now have access to more specialised care, thanks to a new program supported by My Room Children’s Cancer Charity, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, and the Peter Mac Foundation.

Launched in February 2026, the My Room Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Fellowship program supports a new cohort of oncology fellows each year, with structured training to improve care for the growing number of cancer patients aged 15 to 25. The program runs through the Victorian Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Cancer Service at Peter Mac.
Young people with cancer face challenges that are distinct from those of younger children and adults. By focusing on the specific needs of adolescents and young adults, the program is addressing an important gap in cancer care.
“Certain types of cancer are more common among these patients, but diagnosis and treatment can also be more complicated, leading to poorer outcomes for many,” says Associate Professor Jeremy Lewin, Medical Director of the Victorian AYA Cancer Service.
“The program will train the next generation of doctors to ensure they are equipped with the skills and knowledge to deliver appropriate treatment and support for young people with cancer.”
The first two fellows appointed to the program are Dr Kristene Rimbaldo and Dr Andrea Zhu. Both are completing their final year of Paediatric Oncology training at the Royal Children’s Hospital and are each spending six months caring for young people with cancer at Peter Mac. Working alongside the Victorian AYA Cancer Service team, they will build their skills and deepen their understanding of how cancer affects adolescents and young adults.
“Our organisations are united by a simple purpose: to make sure every young person has access to the very best care, research and support,” said Craig Connelly, CEO of the Peter Mac Foundation.
“Together, we are helping to give adolescents and young adults with cancer every possible chance.”
Margaret Zita OAM, CEO of My Room Children’s Cancer Charity, said she is proud to partner with Peter Mac on this innovative program.
"The fellowship represents an important investment in the next generation of oncologists – training doctors who not only treat the disease, but understand the unique physical, emotional, and social challenges these young people face.”

Peter Mac thanks My Room for their remarkable partnership and shared commitment to improving outcomes for young people facing cancer.
