Creating lasting good: why Roger became a Friend for Life

2 min read 29 June 2026

After seeing the impact of cancer on people close to him, Roger chose to become a Peter Mac Friend for Life. Friends for Life are supporters who include a gift in their Will to help future generations affected by cancer.

For Roger, giving has always been about contributing to something that will endure. Throughout his life, he has been guided by a belief in supporting institutions that make a meaningful difference – those that combine expertise with compassion, and whose impact reaches far beyond any one individual.

It’s what led him to Peter Mac.

He told us: “Supporting medical research through Peter Mac allows me to convert private gratitude into public good, to turn the accidents of my own wellbeing into opportunities for others.

I can think of few institutions that better embody the values I would wish to see endure: courage, intelligence and compassion, grounded in an unwavering respect for human dignity.”

Roger has seen firsthand how important those values are.

Like many people, he has had close friends and colleagues affected by cancer, and understands the difference that research, care and innovation can make at the most difficult times:

“I have seen close friends and colleagues benefit from Peter Mac’s extraordinary blend of scientific excellence and human care – from the precision of treatment, to the spirit with which it is delivered.”

By becoming a Peter Mac Friend for Life, Roger is helping ensure that vital cancer research will continue into the future. His legacy will support researchers to pursue new ideas, develop better treatments, and improve outcomes for people affected by cancer.

“Few of us can change the course of history, but all of us can help sustain the institutions that do,” he says. “If my contribution can help a scientist think more boldly, or even help one patient and the people who love them feel that flicker of hope that keeps love alive through illness, then it will have served its purpose.”

It’s a simple but powerful idea: that what we choose to do today can shape what becomes possible tomorrow.

Roger’s gift makes him part of a community of supporters who share that belief – people who are helping to sustain life-saving cancer research for generations to come.
